During August, 1917, 33rd Division were in the line on the extreme left of the Western Front, near Nieuport on the Belgian coast and on 16th August, the 20th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 19 Brigade took over the trenches in the Lombartzyde sector where they remained until relieved on 21st August when they moved back into support positions in the Redan from where they supplied working and carrying parties. The battalion diary makes no mention of any casualties during this time but here they had to contend with the usual conditions and dangers of trench warfare, which included shell fire, snipers and patrol work and some losses were sustained by the battalion. One of these was Charles Turner who was killed on 17th August.
